The film industry in India has been in a great state of flux in the last two decades. During this period, cinema and filmmaking have not only seen substantial changes with respect to the medium but also driven various transformations within society itself. The latest move in cinema is its adoption by women with a strong demand for more female driven films and creators who can showcase their voice with greater freedom and fewer constraints. In this article I will discuss the importance of the current developments in Kerala's film industry, particularly Malayalam cinema, showcasing how Malayalam films are significantly representing diverse perspectives through engaging themes such as feminism, politics and motherhood [1]. The changes taking place in Malayalam cinema can be interpreted as a shift from traditional patriarchal values towards a more contemporary, liberal outlook. Malayalam cinema is slowly moving away from the mainstream Bollywood-style films and becoming more open to women's issues. Malayalam cinema has historically been a male-dominated industry, but there have been attempts to bring in gender equality. In the early years, women were stereotypically casted as artistes playing supporting roles such as the mother or sister of the hero. In 1967, however, Mrs Mariam was introduced to moviegoers by director A Vincent in Kallichellamma which was one of the first movies to have a female lead [2]. In a similar vein, a few years later, in 1969, Kamal directed Neelakuyil wherein he gave a well-defined role to the protagonist Kutty Thressia who was struggling with the patriarchy. However, these films were not received well by the public. In fact, women from traditional families were not even allowed to watch these movies as they belonged to a different genre from that of conventional cinema [3]. Malayalam cinema evolved into its present form with directors such as Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Balachandra Menon and Shaji N Karun who introduced new themes and perspectives in their films. Contemporary Malayalam cinema today witnesses a distinct shift in its portrayal of women. The rise of the new generation of directors with directors such as Nishad, A. Thomas, Joshy, Kamal, Punjabi and Abbas-Mustan have helped in bringing women into the limelight. This new wave has also allowed for a certain amount of female-centred narrative. One of the most recent examples is "Appu". This film talks about violence against women within the context of marital disputes without being judgmental towards either gender. Another important change is the inclusion of women into the world of cinema as directors, screenwriters and producers. Lal Jose, Kerala's popular director has given opportunities to many female directors. Such boldness is particularly seen among the upcoming filmmakers with women being more open to entering this field. The latest addition to this wave of women protagonists in Malayalam cinema are Aishwarya Rajesh, who is now a bankable actor in Tamil cinemas, Tovino Thomas with his debut film Njandukalude Naattil Oridavela being a blockbuster hit. Prithvi Raj has also received critical acclaim for her role in Premam [4]. cfa1e77820
